Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — Official Announcement: Everything We Know

This is Warfare Without Limits. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Modern Warfare 4 was announced on May 28, 2026 — the twenty-third installment in the Call of Duty series and the fourth entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series, following Modern Warfare III from 2023.

Activision is surely hoping Modern Warfare 4 performs better than 2025's Black Ops 7 — that game had the series' worst sales-year ranking since 2008. Infinity Ward, the studio that created the Modern Warfare brand, is back in the lead developer role after Black Ops 7 was handled by Treyarch.

Release Date & Platforms

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch on October 23, 2026, and be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It will not be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

The Nintendo Switch 2 release is notable — Call of Duty has been absent from Nintendo platforms since the Wii U version of Ghosts in 2013. Microsoft pledged to bring Call of Duty to Switch as part of its regulatory approval for the Activision acquisition, and Modern Warfare 4 is where that promise finally lands. The Switch 2 edition is a native version, not a port.

Modern Warfare 4 is an Xbox Play Anywhere title — buy it once on Xbox and play on both console and PC. Available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders are live now.

Unlike Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 which launched on Xbox Game Pass on release day, Modern Warfare 4 is not launching on Game Pass at launch.

Story — Two Protagonists, One Global Crisis

Following the events of Modern Warfare III, an invasion of the Korean Peninsula by the Korean People's Army threatens to destabilize the world. The story centers on two protagonists: Private Park (played by Young Mazino), a South Korean recruit who fights alongside his squad to protect his home; and Captain John Price (Barry Sloane), the former leader of Task Force 141 who is on the run following his assassination of United States General Herschel Shepherd.

Private Park — Ground Level

Fight as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time alongside his squad. What begins as a routine patrol descends into chaos when North Korea launches a full-scale invasion, forcing Park and his unit into a desperate fight through collapsing cities and counteroffensives. The Campaign drops players into the chaos, pressure, and split-second intensity of ground-level combat. This is a new setting for the franchise, grounded in the military authenticity Modern Warfare is known for and built with attention to the culture, history, and military detail of the region.

Captain Price — Off the Grid

Half a world away, a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him. As Price's off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone's control.

Global Locations

The Campaign takes players around the world — from close-quarters combat in New York, thrilling car chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and trench warfare across Korea. Two protagonists, four major world locations, and a narrative that Infinity Ward describes as bringing long-running storylines to a powerful and emotional breaking point.

The Korean Setting — Context Worth Understanding

Modern Warfare 4's setting on the Korean Peninsula with a renewed conflict between North and South Korea evokes the real-world Korean War, which has been at an armistice since 1953 without an official conclusion. The choice of Korea is a departure from the Middle Eastern and Eastern European settings the series has leaned on heavily since 2007. It's a fresh backdrop — and one with real geopolitical weight that the game will need to handle carefully.

Multiplayer — Ballistic Authority and Kill Block

Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer adds Ballistic Authority, 12 Core maps, and dynamic Kill Block.

Details on what Ballistic Authority actually does are still limited — Infinity Ward is holding the full multiplayer reveal for a larger showcase later this summer. What's confirmed: 12 launch maps at launch is a solid number for a Modern Warfare title, and "dynamic Kill Block" suggests the game is experimenting with how kill streaks or killstreaks interact with the map environment in ways that previous entries haven't.

DMZ Returns

Deploy into Hajin, a sprawling Exclusion Zone forged by the aftermath of the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign. Every operation invites exploration amidst the struggle to survive against the ever-present risk of escalation. A living combat world, DMZ combines narrative-driven Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, player-driven encounters, and match-to-match progression inside a volatile battleground where every deployment matters.

DMZ launched with Modern Warfare 2 in 2022 and was one of the more divisive additions to Call of Duty's live service ecosystem. Bringing it back in Modern Warfare 4 with a direct narrative tie to the campaign — Hajin as a post-campaign zone — suggests Infinity Ward wants to use DMZ as a storytelling vehicle rather than just an extraction mode.
