WoW Forever Legacy System Guide: Challenges, Perk Trees and Rewards

WoW Forever Legacy System Guide: Challenges, Perk Trees and Rewards

Legacy is one of the largest progression systems coming to World of Warcraft: Forever. It combines achievement-style challenges, account-wide progress, character-specific perk trees and a separate track filled with cosmetic rewards.

The system is designed to keep the entire Level 1-60 journey relevant. Leveling additional classes, improving professions, exploring Azeroth, earning PvP ranks and defeating dungeon or raid bosses can all permanently advance your account.

Unlike a traditional achievement score, Legacy Points have a practical purpose. Every point unlocked on the account becomes available to your characters, allowing each hero to create a different Legacy build based on how that character is played.

How the Legacy System Works

The basic Legacy progression loop consists of five steps:

  1. Complete a Legacy Challenge.
  2. Earn one or more Legacy Points.
  3. Unlock those points across your account.
  4. Distribute up to 16 points independently on each character.
  5. Continue earning points to unlock Legacy Reward Track rewards.

Legacy Points are not consumed when one character spends them. If your account has unlocked 16 points, your Warrior can spend all 16 in Resourcefulness while your Mage uses those same 16 unlocked points in Adventure and Professions.

This allows every character to maintain a separate build. A leveling alt can choose experience and recovery bonuses, while a crafting character can invest in profession skill gains and additional materials.

Why Can Players Earn 65 Points but Spend Only 16?

The limit prevents players from feeling forced to complete every available challenge for character power. You only need 16 unlocked points to reach the initial gameplay cap on a character.

The remaining challenges are still valuable because your total earned points advance the separate Legacy Reward Track. That track contains pets, mounts, cosmetic items and prestige rewards rather than additional combat power.

How to Earn Legacy Points

Legacy Challenges resemble achievements, but they are intended to complement normal gameplay instead of requiring unusual or disconnected objectives.

Class Challenges

Leveling different classes is one of the primary ways to earn Legacy Points. The BlizzCon build showed milestones at Levels 25, 45 and 60.

Example Challenge Requirement Reward
Novice Druid Reach Level 25 on a Druid 1 Legacy Point
Experienced Druid Reach Level 45 on a Druid 1 Legacy Point
Master Druid Reach Level 60 on a Druid 1 Legacy Point

Similar milestones were shown for Warriors. The complete list for every class will be confirmed during beta testing.

Profession Challenges

Professions also provide account progression. Engineering and Blacksmithing challenges were shown at skill levels 150, 225 and 300, with each milestone awarding a Legacy Point.

This means dedicated crafters and gatherers can advance Legacy without relying entirely on raids or PvP.

Adventure Challenges

Adventure challenges cover exploration, questlines, reputation milestones and major accomplishments in the open world.

One challenge shown during BlizzCon, Lord Valthalak Laid to Rest, required completing the quest chain that begins with An Earnest Proposition and ends with Saving the Best for Last.

Dungeon and Raid Challenges

Dungeon objectives use milestone names such as Novice Spelunker, Experienced Spelunker and Master Spelunker. Their complete requirements were not visible in the preview build.

Several raid challenges were revealed:

Challenge Requirement Reward
Conqueror of the Lair Defeat Onyxia 1 Legacy Point
Conqueror of the Wilds Complete the required Hyjal Summit encounters 1 Legacy Point
Conqueror of the Deeps Complete the required Barrow Deeps encounters 1 Legacy Point

PvP Challenges

PvP players will earn Legacy progress through PvP ranks and other competitive accomplishments. Blizzard has not yet revealed the complete PvP challenge list.

Adventure Legacy Tree

The Adventure tree focuses on leveling additional characters, recovering between encounters and making repeated journeys through Azeroth more convenient.

Perk Effect Shown in the BlizzCon Build
Well Rested Increases the rate at which Rested Experience accumulates and raises its maximum cap by 4% at Rank 1.
Talented Allows the character to begin earning talent points at Level 9 instead of Level 10. The maximum remains 51 talent points.
High Alert Improves detection of nearby Stealthed targets as if the character were one level higher. Does not work in Battlegrounds.
Thrill of Adventure Restores 1% maximum Health and Mana over 10 seconds after dealing the killing blow to a non-trivial enemy. Disabled in Dungeons, Raids and Battlegrounds.

This is the most natural starting tree for leveling alts. Well Rested reduces downtime between play sessions, while Thrill of Adventure provides additional recovery during open-world questing.

Professions Legacy Tree

The Professions tree supports crafting, gathering, fishing, Cooking and long-term Tradeskill development.

Perk Effect Shown in the BlizzCon Build
Working Overtime Increases the chance to gain a skill point from Primary, Secondary or class-based Tradeskills by 4% at Rank 1.
Bountiful Harvest Increases scarce materials gathered through Mining, Herbalism and Skinning by 20% at Rank 1.
Performance Bonus Provides a 5% chance to receive 100% additional Merchant Favor when delivering a crate to the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics.
Luremaster Provides a 25% chance to catch an additional fish while an active lure is equipped.
Master Chef Cooking recipes have a 10% chance to create an additional result.
Dedicated Study A 25-second ability with a 23-hour cooldown that increases the character's lowest Tradeskill by 1. If both Primary Professions and all three Secondary Tradeskills are already at 300, it grants 2-4 random Elemental Essences instead.

A gathering character will likely prioritize Bountiful Harvest, while a dedicated crafter can use Working Overtime and Dedicated Study to reduce the time required to reach maximum skill.

Resourcefulness Legacy Tree

The Resourcefulness tree reduces several inconveniences associated with Classic-style gameplay. It includes bonuses for reputation, Honor, durability, class reagents and the new Camping system.

Perk Effect Shown in the BlizzCon Build
The Quick and the Dead Increases movement speed while dead by 5%. Helpful abilities cost no resources for one minute after resurrection or until entering combat.
Reinforce Reduces durability lost when the character dies by 6% at Rank 1.
Diplomat Increases Reputation gains by 2% at Rank 1.
For Great Honor Increases Honor Points earned by 2% at Rank 1.
Permanence Extends long-duration class buffs granted to party or raid members by 50%. Benefits received from resting at camps also last 50% longer.
Field Guide Reduces the cooldown for adding Camping features by 8% at Rank 1.
Reagent Economy Class abilities no longer require reagents purchased from vendors. Tier 1 Camping features also become free to craft.

Reagent Economy is one of the most significant convenience perks shown so far. WoW Forever is retaining class reagents, but characters that invest deeply enough in Resourcefulness can eventually remove that recurring cost.

Legacy Reward Track

Reaching the 16-point spending cap does not end Legacy progression. Every point earned continues to count toward the account-wide Reward Track.

The BlizzCon demonstration showed the following rewards:

Total Legacy Points Reward Type
15 Replica Ironforge Air Rifle Cosmetic or collectible item
25 Spectral Bear Cub Battle pet
40 Spectral Bear Tabard Transmog
55 Reins of the Spectral Bear Mount

The Reward Track is intended to provide cosmetic and prestige rewards rather than competitive power. Players can therefore stop completing challenges after unlocking their preferred 16-point build without falling behind in combat.

How Legacy Works in Hardcore

Hardcore characters follow stricter Legacy rules. Progress earned under normal, PvP or roleplaying rules cannot be transferred into Hardcore.

Progress Direction Allowed
Normal, PvP or Roleplaying to Hardcore No
Hardcore to other Forever rulesets Yes

This prevents players from building a powerful Legacy setup in the safer normal ruleset and importing those advantages into a fresh Hardcore character.

Progress earned legitimately in Hardcore can flow outward. Hardcore will also receive dedicated challenges because objectives such as earning PvP ranks do not fit its enclosed ruleset.

Why Blizzard Created Legacy

The idea grew from Blizzard's experience with Hardcore. Permanent death repeatedly sent players back into low-level zones, keeping areas populated and creating opportunities for new social encounters.

Legacy attempts to produce a similar effect without requiring characters to die permanently. Starting another class, learning a different profession or revisiting older zones provides permanent account progress.

This is especially important because WoW Forever is built around a lasting Level 60 cap and horizontal progression. The game will receive new regions, dungeons, raids and systems without automatically invalidating everything players previously earned.

Legacy Builds for Different Characters

Leveling Alt

Well Rested, Talented and Thrill of Adventure should provide the most immediate value while leveling. The final build will depend on tree prerequisites revealed during beta.

Gathering Character

Bountiful Harvest is the obvious foundation for a character dedicated to Mining, Herbalism or Skinning. Working Overtime can also shorten profession progression.

Crafting Character

Dedicated Study, Master Chef and Performance Bonus support daily profession development, additional results and the new merchant delivery systems.

Raid Character

Permanence may reduce the frequency of refreshing long-duration group buffs. Reagent Economy could also remove the need to carry vendor reagents for important class abilities.

PvP Character

For Great Honor improves Honor acquisition, while High Alert offers additional Stealth detection outside Battlegrounds. High Alert is specifically disabled inside Battlegrounds.

What Remains Unknown

  • Whether Legacy Points can be freely reset
  • Whether resetting a build will require gold or another resource
  • Whether players can save and swap between multiple Legacy builds
  • The final pathing and prerequisites inside each tree
  • The complete list of launch challenges
  • The final number of ranks for every perk
  • When the 16-point spending cap will increase
  • Whether a separate traditional achievement system will exist alongside Legacy
  • The complete list of future Reward Track rewards

Blizzard plans to expand Legacy after launch with new challenges, perks, additional tree columns, higher spending caps and potentially entirely new Legacy Trees.
