WoW Forever Races Guide: Racial Abilities and Best Race for Every Class

WoW Forever Races Guide: Racial Abilities and Best Race for Every Class

Choosing a race in World of Warcraft: Forever is about more than your character’s appearance. Racial abilities can improve your damage, help you escape crowd control, make leveling easier, or give you an advantage in specific encounters.

WoW Forever also introduces new race and class combinations alongside the Skyborne, a playable race available to both the Alliance and Horde. With several racial abilities changed during the beta, the best choice may look different from what you remember in Classic.

In this guide, we cover every race, their abilities, available classes, and the combinations worth considering for different playstyles.

How Racial Abilities Work in WoW Forever

Every race brings a selection of active abilities and passive bonuses. Some are designed for combat, while others help with exploration, professions, or escaping dangerous situations. Night Elves can temporarily increase their critical strike chance, Orcs can boost their offensive power, and Tauren gain extra health. Meanwhile, abilities such as Escape Artist and Will of the Forsaken can be especially useful against crowd control. The right race depends on what you want to do. A race that performs well in a raid damage simulation is not automatically the best option for PvP, tanking, healing, or leveling.

WoW Forever Race and Class Combinations

Before comparing racial bonuses, check whether your chosen race can play the class you want. The table includes the new combinations introduced in WoW Forever.

Faction Race Available Classes
Alliance Human Human Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock
Alliance Dwarf Dwarf Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman
Alliance Night Elf Night Elf Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Druid
Alliance Gnome Gnome Warrior, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock
Alliance High Order Skyborne High Order Skyborne Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Mage, Druid
Horde Orc Orc Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Mage, Warlock
Horde Undead Undead Warrior, Paladin, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock
Horde Tauren Tauren Warrior, Hunter, Shaman, Druid
Horde Troll Troll Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Warlock
Horde Windshaper SkyborneSkyborne Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Druid

Among the new combinations are Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Undead Paladin, and Troll Warlock. The two Skyborne groups also have different class options: Alliance Skyborne can become Mages, while Horde Skyborne can become Shamans.

Alliance Racial Abilities

Human

Humans offer critical strike chance, Spirit, and an active ability that removes stuns. They are a flexible choice for players interested in both PvE and PvP.

Good choices: Priest, Paladin, Warrior, Rogue, Mage, and Warlock. Spirit is particularly relevant to mana users who benefit from regeneration, while stun removal can be valuable in PvP.

Dwarf

Dwarves bring a defensive cooldown and a hit chance bonus. Their racial abilities make them an appealing option for players who value survivability as well as reliable attacks.

Good choices: Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Priest, Rogue, and Shaman. Stoneform is useful in encounters and PvP situations involving physical damage or removable effects.

Night Elf

Night Elves combine a damage cooldown with mobility and defensive utility. They are also one of the few races that can play Druid.

Good choices: Druid, Rogue, Hunter, and Warrior. Elune’s Light gives damage dealers an offensive cooldown, while Quickness and Shadowmeld offer useful defensive and open-world tools.

Gnome

Gnomes are an attractive choice for players who enjoy an active damage or healing boost and an escape tool for movement-impairing effects.

Good choices: Mage, Warlock, Rogue, and Priest. Escape Artist can be valuable in PvP, while Eureka! gives both damage dealers and healers another ability to plan around.

High Order Skyborne

The Alliance version of the Skyborne combines haste with gliding and regeneration. It is also an additional Alliance option for Druid players.

Good choices: Druid, Mage, Hunter, Rogue, and Warrior. The haste bonus supports several playstyles, while Read Leyline can be useful when managing downtime. It cannot be used while Innervate is active.

Horde Racial Abilities

Orc

Orcs offer an offensive cooldown, protection against certain magical effects, and a passive bonus for Hunter and Warlock pets.

Good choices: Hunter, Warlock, Warrior, Rogue, and Shaman. Command is especially relevant for pet-focused Hunter and Warlock builds, while Blood Fury provides a cooldown for damage windows.

Undead

Undead characters combine crowd-control removal with sustain. WoW Forever also introduces the option to play an Undead Paladin.

Good choices: Priest, Warlock, Mage, Rogue, and Paladin. Will of the Forsaken is especially useful against fear effects, although it does not remove every type of crowd control.

Tauren

Tauren focus on survivability, area control, and getting around the world. Their extra health is relevant to tanks and players who prefer a more defensive racial package.

Good choices: Druid, Warrior, Hunter, and Shaman. Tauren are worth considering for tanking and open-world play, especially if extra health and an area stun matter more to you than a damage cooldown.

Troll

Trolls have an offensive haste cooldown and several health regeneration tools. They can also play Warlock in WoW Forever.

Good choices: Hunter, Mage, Priest, Shaman, Warrior, and Warlock. Berserking can be timed around important damage windows, while regeneration helps during extended solo play.

Windshaper Skyborne

The Horde Skyborne share their haste, gliding, and elemental damage bonuses with the Alliance version. Their faction-specific ability, Skysight, focuses on movement instead of regeneration.

Good choices: Druid, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, and Warrior. Windshaper is a useful option for players who value haste and mobility, particularly when exploring or moving between encounters.

Best Race for Every Class in WoW Forever

These recommendations are based on racial abilities and practical strengths, not a universal ranking. Your preferred faction, specialization, gear, and content can change which option is most useful.

Class Alliance Picks Horde Picks Why Consider Them?
Warrior Night Elf, Human, Dwarf Orc, Tauren, Skyborne Choose offensive cooldowns for damage or extra health and defensive tools for tanking.
Paladin Human, Dwarf Undead Human offers Spirit and crit; Dwarf adds hit and Stoneform. Undead is the Horde option.
Hunter Night Elf, Dwarf, Skyborne Orc, Troll, Skyborne Orc supports pet damage; Night Elf and Troll provide offensive cooldowns.
Rogue Night Elf, Gnome, Human Orc, Undead, Skyborne Compare damage cooldowns with mobility and crowd-control removal.
Priest Human, Gnome, Dwarf Undead, Troll Human Spirit supports regeneration; other picks offer defensive or offensive utility.
Shaman Dwarf Orc, Troll, Skyborne Dwarf is the Alliance option; Horde choices include burst cooldowns and haste.
Mage Gnome, Human, Skyborne Troll, Undead, Orc Look at Eureka!, haste, burst cooldowns, or control removal depending on your content.
Warlock Gnome, Human Orc, Undead, Troll Orc Command benefits pet damage; Gnome and Undead offer useful active abilities.
Druid Night Elf, Skyborne Tauren, Skyborne Night Elf offers a crit cooldown, Skyborne provides haste, and Tauren adds health.

Which Race Is Best for PvP?

In PvP, the ability to escape or reduce crowd control can be more valuable than a small increase in simulated damage. Consider what usually stops your class from fighting or reaching its target.

  • Human: Will to Survive removes stuns, while Perception helps detect stealthed enemies.
  • Gnome: Escape Artist helps deal with roots and snares.
  • Undead: Will of the Forsaken is useful against fear, charm, and sleep.
  • Orc: Hardiness shortens stuns, and Shatter Curse provides magical defense.
  • Dwarf: Stoneform helps against certain physical effects and damage.
  • Tauren: War Stomp gives you an area stun that can create an opportunity to escape or respond.

No racial answers every threat, so the best PvP choice depends on your class, opponents, and whether you prefer offensive pressure or a defensive escape.

Which Race Is Best for Leveling?

For leveling, think about how often a racial ability helps between difficult fights, not just during them.

  • Tauren: Plainsrunning improves travel on foot, while extra health and War Stomp help when pulls become dangerous.
  • Undead: Cannibalize and Touch of the Grave provide sustain while fighting through the world.
  • Troll: Regeneration abilities help restore health between encounters.
  • Skyborne: Gliding and faction-specific regeneration or movement abilities add useful exploration tools.
  • Night Elf: Increased movement speed and Shadowmeld are useful when navigating the open world.

What Changed From Classic?

WoW Forever keeps familiar racial identities but changes several abilities. Most importantly, Blizzard has moved away from the old weapon specialization racials that encouraged certain races to seek specific weapon types.

Following the October 26 update, Humans have 1% critical strike chance, Dwarves have 1% hit chance, and Orcs have the pet-focused Command passive. Older guides may still show previous beta values, so check when a racial guide or simulation was last updated.

F

requently Asked Questions

Does race matter in WoW Forever?

Yes. Racial abilities can affect damage, healing resources, survivability, mobility, and crowd-control options. However, the practical value of a race depends on your class and the content you play.

What is the best race for Feral Druid?

In MythicSim’s October 26 raid-boss preset, Night Elf had the highest simulated Feral Druid DPS, followed by Skyborne and Tauren. That is a result for one specific build and encounter, not a guarantee for every character or activity.

Can Alliance players choose Shaman?

Yes. Dwarves can play Shaman in WoW Forever, giving the Alliance access to a combination unavailable in original Classic.

Can Horde players choose Paladin?

Yes. Undead can play Paladin in WoW Forever.

Can Skyborne join either faction?

Yes. High Order Skyborne belong to the Alliance, while Windshaper Skyborne belong to the Horde. Their shared classes are Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Druid. Alliance Skyborne can also play Mage, while Horde Skyborne can play Shaman.

Should I always choose the highest-DPS race?

Not necessarily. A damage simulation cannot fully represent crowd control, defensive abilities, movement, or the value of playing with your preferred faction and character. Use simulations as one part of the decision, then choose a race that fits how you enjoy playing.
