WoW Midnight Patch 12.0.7 — Open World Myth Track Gear: First Time in WoW History
For the first time in WoW's history, players will be able to acquire Myth track gear from open world content in Patch 12.0.7. This is not a minor quality-of-life addition — it's a structural shift in how WoW thinks about the gear ceiling outside of raids and Mythic+. Open world content has never rewarded Myth track items before. Patch 12.0.7 changes that, through a new quest tied directly to the Heroic World Tier system in the Showdown zones.
The Quest — Knocking Off the Top
Patch 12.0.7 introduces a new quest called Knocking Off the Top for Heroic World Tier. Completing this quest allows the player to choose between a Cloak, Belt, or Bracer for their armor type.

Three slot choices — Cloak, Belt, or Bracer — covering the three least-contested gear slots in most endgame builds. These are also slots that many players leave at Hero track or below simply because Mythic raid and high Mythic+ don't always drop them in a useful combination. Having a Myth track option from open world content fills that gap directly.
Item level: The items are rewarded at 1/6 Myth track, item level 272.
This is the entry point of the Myth track — the same item level as a Great Vault reward from a +10 Mythic+ key. It won't replace a fully upgraded 6/6 Myth track piece, but 1/6 Myth track is a meaningful step up from Hero track gear and provides a foundation for future Voidcore upgrades.
How to Complete It — Void Commander's Emblems
The quest requires you to obtain 4 Void Commander's Emblems from Nexus-Captain Leth'ir or Imperator Pertinax — the World Bosses for the new Patch 12.0.7 zones.
These two bosses are the World Bosses of the Showdown zones introduced in 12.0.7:
- Nexus-Captain Leth'ir — World Boss of Naigtal, the fungal arcane-rich world occupied by the Hal'hadar ethereal faction
- Imperator Pertinax — World Boss of Val, the icy world where the Domanaar have established their bastion of power
Both bosses are accessed through the Void Portal in Voidstorm. The portal rotates between Naigtal and Val on a weekly schedule — only one zone is active at any given time.
The Time Gate Problem
Here is where the system becomes significantly more restrictive than it first appears.
Only one World Boss is available each week because of the zone rotation. It is fair to assume you will only be able to obtain an Emblem once per loot lockout, meaning you can only obtain one Myth Track item every four weeks. Given the 8-week patch cadence, this means at most 2 Myth items before Midnight Season 2 arrives.
Let's break down the math:
| Week |
Available Boss |
Emblem Count |
| Week 1 | Boss A | 1/4 |
| Week 2 | Boss B | 2/4 |
| Week 3 | Boss A | 3/4 |
| Week 4 | Boss B | 4/4 — Quest complete, collect Myth item |
| Week 5–8 | Repeat | Second item by Week 8 |
Four weeks per item, 8-week patch window, two items maximum. Both can only be Cloak, Belt, or Bracer — one choice per completion.
This is one of the slowest Myth track acquisition paths in Season 1. By comparison:
- A Nebulous Voidcore on a +10 Mythic+ key gives Myth track gear in a single week
- Mythic Sporefall drops Sporefused ilvl 298 gear from a single weekly kill
- The Great Vault rewards Myth track from a single +10 key clear
The Knocking Off the Top quest is not a fast gearing path. It's a long-form catch-up mechanic that rewards players who engage with Heroic World Tier consistently across the full patch cycle.
Who Should Do This
Despite the time gate, the quest has real value for specific player profiles:
Players missing Cloak, Belt, or Bracer in Myth track. These are slots that many well-geared characters still have at Hero track simply because RNG didn't cooperate. A guaranteed Myth track item in one of these slots — even at 1/6 — is a meaningful upgrade and a Voidcore upgrade target.
Players who can't consistently run Mythic+. The quest requires Heroic World Tier engagement, which is more casual-friendly than a coordinated Mythic+ group. If your gameplay is primarily solo or small group, this is the most accessible Myth track item in the patch.
Players who are engaged with the Showdown zones anyway. If you're working toward the Tortured Gorger mount from Heroic Showdowns or the Voidmancer's Starcarver from the Val meta achievement, you're already killing World Bosses weekly. The Emblems are a free bonus for content you're already clearing.
Players stacking Voidcore upgrades. A 1/6 Myth track piece is immediately eligible for Voidcore upgrading. Four consecutive Voidcore applications push it to 5/6 — a genuinely competitive item level. If you have surplus Nebulous Voidcores from the weekly Sporefall quest and Voidforge purchases, the Knocking Off the Top item gives you a reliable upgrade target.
Heroic World Tier Requirements — Context
The quest is locked behind Heroic World Tier, which has its own unlock requirements and item level recommendation.
To unlock Heroic World Tier for Showdown zones, you must complete the achievement Heroic Tendencies, which requires killing a World Boss in either Naigtal or Val on Normal World Tier. Doing this unlocks Heroic World Tier for both zones.
Heroic World Tier in Showdowns is no joke. The recommended item level is 274 — sitting at the Heroic raid ceiling from Patch 12.0.5. Players in full Normal raid gear will struggle, and freshly dinged characters have no business being in it without prep.
The flow: complete Normal World Tier to unlock Heroic, then kill World Bosses in Heroic World Tier to collect Void Commander's Emblems. The Heroic World Tier kill still requires adequate gear — this isn't a catch-up path for undergeared characters, it's a lateral gearing option for players already in the 270+ item level range.
Why This Is Historically Significant
Open world gear has always had a hard ceiling in WoW. That ceiling has shifted over expansions — from Rare track in Shadowlands to Champion and Hero track in recent patches — but Myth track has always been exclusive to Mythic raids and high Mythic+ keys.
Patch 12.0.7 breaks that precedent entirely. The time gate is real and the item level is entry-level Myth track, but the category change matters regardless of the restriction. Blizzard's willingness to put Myth track loot in open world content — even a slow, gated version — signals a broader design direction for what open world activities can reward.
Whether this expands in Season 2 or remains a one-patch experiment depends entirely on how the community engages with Heroic World Tier across the 12.0.7 cycle.
