WoW Midnight Patch 12.0.7 — Omnium Folio Guide: The New Power System

WoW Midnight Patch 12.0.7 — Omnium Folio Guide: The New Power System

The Omnium Folio is the first mid-expansion power-up mechanic of Midnight. Power-up systems like these have become a regular addition across WoW expansions — they serve as a way to soft-nerf existing content for players still working through it, while giving everyone something new to build toward in the final weeks of a patch cycle.

Blizzard's official Midnight: Revelations preview describes the Omnium Folio as a runic ledger containing powerful runes players can use in battle. Once unlocked, players take part in weekly activities to imbue more runes, customize them, and unlock their maximum potential against the Void.

What Is the Omnium Folio?

The Omnium Folio bears similarities to items like the Onyx Annulet and Durable Information Securing Container from past expansions. However, this time around the mechanic does not take up a gear slot — a key distinction from most previous borrowed-power systems.

Instead, the Omnium Folio functions as a talent tree similar to the Reshii Wraps. It takes 5 weeks to fully unlock. Every week you earn a new talent point with a few choices to select from. In the first week you unlock your Core Rune — a new passive ability. Subsequent weeks unlock passives that further empower the Core Rune's effects.

Once a talent row is unlocked, you can freely swap between options at any time. The Omnium Folio is accessed from a dedicated button in your minimap, in a similar position to where Renown details appeared in past expansions.

The Story Behind It

Rommath and Umbric — Midnight's favourite feuding Magisters — are on a mission to restore the Sunstrider Omnium, an ancient elven relic created by Dath'remar Sunstrider to study the schools of magic. After a long period of dormancy, the Omnium has reawakened on its own.

The questline reveals that the artifact once served as a beacon of knowledge to the Magisters working in the Terrace, but abruptly stopped functioning decades ago. The Sunwell's conversion into the Darkwell reawakened it — and it is now our responsibility to stop it from spreading further chaos, while uncovering why it went dormant in the first place.

How to Unlock the Omnium Folio

Access to the Omnium Folio begins with a short questline in the outdoor area of Magister's Terrace, starting with The Magister's Call. Complete the introductory chain, and the Omnium Folio becomes available in your minimap interface. The entire unlock sequence is relatively quick — the real progression investment comes from the five-week rune unlocking process afterward.

All Runes — Full Talent Tree Breakdown

You choose one option per row. Choices are free to swap after unlocking. Week 5 is the final row, completing the full system.

Week 1 — Core Rune (Choose One)

This is the foundation of your entire Omnium Folio build. Every subsequent rune modifies or enhances whichever Core Rune you select here.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279596/rune-of-void-touched-orbs — Every 10 seconds, you attract a void orb, up to a maximum of 5. Your attacks send these orbs at your enemy, dealing 2,745 Cosmic damage each. Your healing spells redirect the orbs to the lowest health nearby ally, restoring 4,116 health per orb.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279599/rune-of-unleashed-fire — Your spells have a chance to call down a pillar of fire, dealing 2,745 Fire damage to an enemy or cauterizing the wounds of a nearby ally, restoring 4,116 health.

Which Core Rune to pick: Rune of Void-Touched Orbs has more consistent uptime — up to 5 stored orbs means the effect triggers in bursts rather than relying on spell proc chance. Rune of Unleashed Fire is simpler and more passive but harder to predict. If you're a healer or play content where you regularly heal allies, Void-Touched Orbs scales better due to its dual damage and healing application.

Week 2 — Defensive and Utility Runes (Choose One)

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279603/rune-of-self-mending — When below 75% health, your Core Rune also heals you for 4,116 health. The simplest pick — pure personal survivability that activates automatically.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279604/rune-of-void-tainted-shell — When struck for more than 10% of your maximum health in a single hit, gain an absorb shield of up to 18,523 damage. However, 50% of the absorbed amount lingers, dealing its damage back over 10 seconds. Can only occur once every 30 seconds. Strong in spikey-damage scenarios but the lingering damage bleed-back requires healing awareness.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279605/rune-of-lynxlike-reflexes — When struck in combat, increase your Speed by 115 for 10 seconds. Cannot occur more than once every 30 seconds. The mobility pick — useful in content where repositioning matters, particularly Heroic World Tier Showdowns and Mythic+.

Which to pick: Rune of Self Mending for solo and casual content. Rune of Void-Tainted Shell for raiding and Mythic+ where burst damage spikes are the kill condition. Rune of Lynxlike Reflexes for Showdown zones and open-world Heroic content where movement is the primary survival mechanic.

Week 3 — Lingering Effect (One Option)

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1287555/rune-of-lingering — The effects of your Core Rune leave behind a periodic effect that deals 2,745 Cosmic damage or restores 4,116 health over 8 seconds, based on whether the target is an enemy or ally. Your Core Rune prioritizes hitting targets not already affected by Rune of Lingering.

Week 3 has only one option — no decision needed. It universally extends the duration of your Core Rune's impact, making both damage and healing output more sustained rather than burst-based. This is the row that synergizes most strongly with the Week 5 choices.

Week 4 — Secondary Stat Boost (Choose One)

Each option grants a flat secondary stat rating boost that overlaps — meaning it stacks every time your Core Rune procs.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279609/rune-of-critical-power — Core Rune effects increase your Critical Strike rating by 78. This effect can overlap.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1287774/rune-of-burning-haste — Core Rune effects increase your Haste rating by 78. This effect can overlap.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1287771/rune-of-masterful-cunning — Core Rune effects increase your Mastery rating by 78. This effect can overlap.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279613/rune-of-the-versatile-warrior — Core Rune effects increase your Versatility rating by 78. This effect can overlap.

Which to pick: Match your spec's best secondary stat. Check your class Discord or a current stat priority guide for your spec — the choice is straightforward once you know your priority. Versatility is the safest default pick for survivability-focused players or those playing multiple specs without swapping the rune.

Week 5 — Final Power Amplifier (Choose One)

The capstone row. These three options dramatically change how your Omnium Folio performs from this point forward.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279614/rune-of-overload— Increases the effectiveness of your Core Rune ability by 100%. Doubles the raw output of your foundation rune — straightforward and powerful. Best for builds that rely primarily on Core Rune procs rather than the Lingering effect.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279615/rune-of-residual-energy — Increases the effectiveness of your Rune of Lingering effect by 100%. If you invested into Rune of Lingering in Week 3, this doubles that contribution. Best for sustained-damage or sustained-healing builds.

https://www.wowhead.com/ptr-2/spell=1279616/rune-of-echoes — The effects of your Core Rune leave an echoing curse on your target. After 10 seconds, an echo of all the damage and healing done by your Core and Lingering runes is repeated at 50% effectiveness. The highest theoretical ceiling if the 10-second delay lines up cleanly with your rotation and you can maintain consistent pressure. Best on sustained-DPS specs and healers with predictable output windows.

Week 5 recommendation: Rune of Overload is the safest pick for most content. Rune of Echoes has the highest ceiling but requires consistent uptime to deliver its value. Rune of Residual Energy is strong specifically if you built around Rune of Lingering in Week 3.

Is This Just More Borrowed Power?

WoW has done plenty of expansion-specific power systems over the years. Some were loved. Some were tolerated. Some still cause people to whisper "Azerite traits" like they are naming a family curse. The Omnium Folio is the latest version of a mid-season power layer — something to chase, improve, and plug into your character while the patch adds new content around it.

If the Omnium Folio gives players real choices without turning into a spreadsheet prison, it could work well. A small set of runes that let players tailor utility, defensive options, or situational combat power could make the patch feel fresh without rewriting every spec. The danger is an illusion of choice, where one rune is mathematically correct and everyone waits for their class Discord to tell them which button to press. That is always the tightrope with systems like this.

The good news: the Omnium Folio does not take up a gear slot, has a clear 5-week unlock cadence, and allows free swapping between options once unlocked. It avoids the worst design pitfalls of past systems. Whether the rune balance holds up across all specs at high-end content is a question the PTR is actively answering.
