World of Warcraft: Forever Guide: Release Date, New Content and Roadmap

World of Warcraft: Forever Guide: Release Date, New Content and Roadmap

Blizzard has officially revealed World of Warcraft: Forever, a permanent new version of Azeroth built around the original level 1-60 experience. It expands the foundations of early World of Warcraft with new regions, more than 1,000 quests, nine dungeons, new raids, additional class options, a playable race, PvP content, and long-term updates.

Players have already started calling the project WoW Classic+, but that is community shorthand rather than its official name. Blizzard describes Forever as a separate, evergreen home alongside modern WoW and the existing Classic games.

The story takes place after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before the events of Molten Core. Access to the base experience will be included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time.

What Makes WoW Forever Different?

Forever uses original Azeroth as the foundation for an alternate Warcraft timeline. Instead of moving players through The Burning Crusade and later expansions again, Blizzard intends to continue developing Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor with stories, locations, and encounters that were never explored in the original game.

Classic Design Principles

The developers identified four priorities: keeping the game approachable and familiar, treating the world as the central character, placing the journey before the destination, and protecting the social experience.

  • No flying mounts are planned.
  • No level scaling will be used.
  • Leveling, exploration, preparation, professions, and group formation remain important.
  • Rewards are intended to come from playing and exploring rather than skipping directly to endgame.
  • Convenience features will be considered carefully when they could reduce player interaction.

New and Reimagined Regions

More than 1,000 new quests will be distributed throughout the level 1-60 journey. Blizzard has announced four major new or expanded regions for the opening version of Forever.

Mount Hyjal

Players will explore Hyjal after Archimonde's defeat, travel through Darkwhisper Gorge, and help restore a land still recovering from the events of Warcraft III.

Shen'dralas

A previously hidden region between Mulgore and Desolace will connect the Shen'dralar, Eldre'Thalas, Dire Maul, and the neighboring centaur tribes through a new storyline.

The Riverglades

The Riverglades is a frontier of rivers, settlements, trade routes, and competing local interests. It contains more than 150 quests designed primarily for the middle portion of the leveling journey, roughly from the mid-30s into the mid-40s.

Zephras Isle

Zephras Isle provides a new level 1-12 starting experience inspired by elemental magic and Skywall architecture. It is also the homeland of the new playable Skyborne race.

The New Skyborne Race

The Skyborne can choose their faction during character creation. Their available classes depend partly on that decision.

  • Horde Skyborne: Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid, and Shaman.
  • Alliance Skyborne: Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid, and Mage.
  • Skyborne Druids receive race-specific shapeshifting forms.
  • The race includes new racial abilities, voices, dances, customizations, and visual options.

Blizzard is also adding other race and class combinations, with Dwarf Shaman and Forsaken Paladin among the announced examples.

Important: the base WoW Forever experience is included with a subscription, but access to the Skyborne race and Zephras Isle starting experience is currently included in optional paid upgrade packs.

Nine New Dungeons

Dungeon Location or Theme
Hall of ThanesA hidden complex beneath Ironforge.
Ruins of LordaeronA Forsaken mission to reclaim the ruined capital.
Excavation SiteA mysterious location near Whelgar's Excavation.
City of DalaranMagical disorder inside the original city.
Blackmaw HoldA stronghold affected by a disturbing corruption.
The Drowned CityAn adventure involving naga and pirates.
Krol'dok StrongholdA large outdoor dungeon.
Alcaz PrisonA dangerous prison complex on Alcaz Island.
Shaper's TerraceAn expedition focused on Titan mysteries in Un'Goro.

WoW Forever Raids

The first raid wave opens on December 9, 2026 and combines new content with an original World of Warcraft encounter.

  • Barrow Deeps: a new maximum-level 10-player raid.
  • Hyjal Summit: a new 20-player raid located at one of Warcraft's most important landmarks.
  • Onyxia's Lair: the returning 40-player raid.

The new raids will introduce class tier sets and a legendary reward. Blizzard has not yet revealed the complete loot tables, tier bonuses, or legendary quest requirements.

New 15v15 Battleground

The Darkspear Islands will become a 15v15 battleground off the coast of Kalimdor. Its objectives combine strategic control points with Arathi Basin-style flag capture and defense mechanics.

Additional PvP seasons, rewards, and system updates are already included on the post-launch roadmap.

Classes and New Progression Systems

Classes will receive new abilities, talent updates, and new race combinations. Blizzard says its goal is to fill noticeable gaps without removing the identity, limitations, and group value of individual classes.

Legacy Progression

Legacy is an account-oriented progression system aimed at players who enjoy leveling multiple characters. Exact rewards and unlock conditions have not yet been published.

Camping

The new Camping system lets players create campfires in the outdoor world. Other adventurers can visit, contribute through professions, and receive shared campsite bonuses.

Professions and Factions

Profession updates, new factions, account-wide bonuses, new equipment, and additional rewards are also planned. Further profession changes are scheduled for later roadmap updates.

Modern Options Without Losing the Classic Look

  • Optional Transmog with controls for players who prefer the original appearance.
  • Modern and Classic visual presets.
  • High-definition and standard-definition character models.
  • Restored Classic animations for HD models.
  • Official controller and gamepad support.
  • Updated rivers, mist, lighting, moonlight, and other environmental effects.

These rendering improvements are intended to preserve the original art direction rather than replace Azeroth with the visual style of modern WoW.

Optional upgrades add benefits such as the Skyborne race, Zephras Isle, early name reservation, cosmetics, mounts, pets, launch-week friend invitations, and beta access. Beta access begins at the Skyborne Epic Pack level; it is not included with the standard subscription or the smaller Heroic Pack.

What Blizzard Has Not Revealed Yet

  • Complete class changes and talent trees.
  • Dungeon and raid loot tables.
  • Tier-set bonuses and the new legendary reward.

Final Thoughts

World of Warcraft: Forever is considerably more ambitious than another temporary Classic season. It starts with the recognizable level 1-60 world but opens unfinished regions, adds a new timeline, introduces nine dungeons and multiple raid sizes, and gives Blizzard a permanent platform for expanding original Azeroth.

The most important test will be whether the developers can add modern content without losing the slower progression, dangerous world, class identity, and social dependence that define early WoW. The beta beginning September 17 should provide the first clear answer.
